Aid That Reaches Those in Need
In early March, persistent and exceptionally heavy rains caused severe damage in southern Ethiopia. A devastating landslide occurred in the Gamo Zone, claiming numerous lives. More than 70 people were killed, and many others were reported missing. More than 11,000 people have been affected by the aftermath; over 2,000 households were forced to flee their homes, and numerous houses were destroyed or severely damaged.
Thanks to close cooperation with local partners, AVC was informed of the situation at an early stage. Pastor Lako, head of the Full Gospel Church and a long-standing partner, got in touch immediately. Together with his team, he assessed the most urgent needs on the ground. Based on this assessment, relief efforts could be coordinated in a targeted manner and implemented quickly.
Many of those affected are currently living in temporary shelters and rely on basic supplies. There is a shortage of food, clean drinking water, clothing, and medical care. Rebuilding their destroyed homes also poses significant challenges for the affected families.
Local communities are playing a crucial role in this situation. They are distributing food and water, organizing emergency shelters, and providing concrete support to families who have been particularly hard hit.
The current situation is hitting the region at a time when our activities in Ethiopia are gaining greater visibility. Just recently, an AVC staff member was on the ground and reported positive developments in the communities, particularly regarding support for refugees. This makes it all the more clear how important robust structures and reliable partners are when crises strike.
