Time travel to the Dassanech
Trapped in poverty and sorcery
The Dassanech in the Omo Valley lead a life of poverty and dependence, characterized by a lack of education and harmful traditions such as early marriage and genital mutilation. Alcoholism is particularly prevalent among men. The main burden of earning a living for the family lies with the women. The recent flooding of the otherwise arid valley by the Omo River has made their situation even worse. The Dassanech have had to flee to temporary camps.
From the camps to school
For two years now, we have been supporting an employee who mainly looks after the children in Omorate Town. In order to bring about a fundamental change in the Dassanech's way of thinking, we need to start with the children. Establishing schools directly in the camps is not possible for financial and practical reasons. Discussions with the school authorities have shown that schooling in Omorate Town offers the best prospects.
To this end, it is necessary to set up accommodation on site for the pupils from the camps.
